Tax liability is not the amount due

Separate the tax calculation from payments so a refund or amount due stops looking like the tax itself.

One estimate contains two different results

The calculator first determines tax from income and the applicable rules. That result is tax liability inside this scoped model.

Only after liability is known does the worksheet subtract federal withholding. Keeping those stages separate prevents a common mistake: calling a refund the person's tax.

Read the balance without over-reading it

A potential refund means modeled payments exceed modeled liability. An amount due means modeled liability exceeds those payments.

Credits, estimated payments, penalties, and several other return items are outside this calculator, so the final filed balance can differ.
